People who have trees or bushes that produce more fruit than they can use (which is pretty much anyone with fruit trees or bushes) can register with the project. Then volunteers scout the areas to see what's ripe when (also using common sense as to what ripens when), and groups of people gather to pick. A donation is asked if you pick, but not required. Half of the harvest goes to the local food bank system, and the other half gets divided amongst the workers - and that may not sound like you get much, but I was frantically canning for days, plus eating as much as my GI tract would tolerate, and I still barely got through my share before it went bad! I think it's such a fabulous program, and I would love to see it implemented in other urban areas...Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8510263855041653841.post-33430537219945340352012-10-27T04:42:50.909-07:002012-10-27T04:42:50.909-07:00I like to roast my bones a little before I make st...I like to roast my bones a little before I make stock with them. This has been a year of making do for me too, as I haven't had much budget available for fruit purchasing. I've been blessed many times with free fruit or preserves from generous friends. You are so right about urban fruit and nut trees going to waste. ... I feel like my eyes have been opened to that this year more than ever. It seems like every where I go I'm saying, "Look at that tree! Why isn't someone picking from it???" I never would have noticed before I developed my canning habit! :)

Rebekahhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04476729336208895871noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8510263855041653841.post-1482879747174206662012-10-17T07:55:12.271-07:002012-10-17T07:55:12.271-07:00This is my first year in the new duplex, and I los...This is my first year in the new duplex, and I lost most of my canning jars in the move. There are so many fruit and nut sources in the urban area that go unutilized every year. No matter what, food does not get thrown away in our house. We eat a lot of leftovers and freeze large portions. We have a 3 year old son and he understands that milk leftover in the cereal bowl doesn't get poured down the sink. My healthy food awareness also came into focus when I had a newborn and learned about hormones in our meat and dairy.

http://simplyresourceful.blogspot.com/Hollyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05570943641633477896noreply@blogger.com
